Apple’s Back to School 2011 Promo offers $100 gift card instead of iPod

Apple has just announced the anticipated Back To Scholl 2011 promotion offer for students interested in buying a new computer. Unlike past years, when buyers would get free iPods with a qualifying purchase, this year, Apple’s offering a $100 gift card that works for the iTunes Store, Mac App Store, App Store or the iBookstore. Education pricing will also be in effect which gives customers as little as $50 off the purchase of a new computer (MacBook Air) or as much as $200 off (MacBook Pro).

In order to qualify for the promotion, the new Mac must be purchased from the Apple’s Online Store for Education, any Apple Retail Store, or an Apple Authorized Campus Store. The promotion runs from June 16 through September 20, 2011 and the list of qualifying Macs includes all but the cheapest Mac, the Mac mini (The iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Pro all qualify). In addition, customers who purchase a new Mac between now and the official launch of OS X 10.7 Lion next month will get a free upgrade.
