If you have a home or working network and are running Windows 7 on some computer and have windows XP on other PC(s), You might want to share files and hardware like a printer between them. In this article, we will look at the steps to share files/foldes between XP and windows 7 Computers.
As we all know,Share folders/files between two Windows 7 machines with the new HomeGroup feature is an easy process, but the HomeGroup feature is not compatible with Vista or XP. For this tutorial we are using Windows 7 x64 and XP Professional SP3 connected through a basic Linksys home wireless router.
(1)make sure “File and Printer sharing” on Windows 7 to be turned ON.
(2)both machines are members of the same Workgroup which by default is named Workgroup.
Windows 7 to XP
1,On Windows 7, select the folder you wish to share, right click it > Sharing With. Then select Specific People (this time i have elected the test1 folder under D: to be my shared folder). You will need to select who you want to share the folder to (here i have elected the userid with which i log onto Windows 7 with.
Highlight the name and Click the Share button. Then Done at the next screen.
2,On Windows XP, visitting the shared folders can be done in many different ways. One way is to enter into the search box in the Start menu as shown. Then press Enter to ensure that the cursor is inside the box otherwise the shutdown box lol will intervene).( the ip of my Windows 7 computer is 192.168.1.100)
You should be prompted with logon credentials. Use the username and password with appropriate rights. Here I have the ID I log on the Windows 7 machine. You may need to put computernameusername as the userid should the username alone doesn’t work.
That’s it, the Explorer window will appear, and you are now able to share files. Just put the files you want to share in the folder from Windows 7 and it’ll show up in the share.
3,Windows XP to Windows 7
On your XP computer, select the folder that you want to share, right-click it > Sharing and Security. Then tick the boxes as shown (Here i have elected the test folder of C: to be my shared folder). Then click Apply and OK.
4,On your windows 7 pc,just do as with point 2, Start > Run and type as shown. Then hit OK.
That’s just it, the Explorer window will appear, and you are now able to share files. Just put the files you want to share in the folder from Windows 7 and it’ll show up in the share.
