Microsoft has finally and officially release the first Service pack 1 (SP1) of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 to the general public. Released as KB976932, The SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is now available for download at Microsoft Download Center, or via Windows Update.

According to Microsoft, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 helps keep your PCs and servers on the latest support level. It also provides ongoing improvements to the Windows Operating System (OS), by including previous updates delivered over Windows Update as well as continuing incremental updates to the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 platforms based on customer and partner feedback. This enables organizations to deploy a single set of updates.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is available for installation in the following languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese-Hong Kong SAR, Chinese-Simplified, Chinese-Taiwan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese-Brazil, Portuguese-Portugal, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Ukrainian.

As many of the updates included in the service pack are already publicly available through Windows Update, Microsoft has recommended end-users to use Windows Update to install SP1 so that Windows Update can offer a smaller and more appropriate downloads. If you’ve already got automatic updating turned on, then this update Windows 7 Service Pack 1 will be around only 73 MB in size. Read the points below before proceeding:

  • In order to download and install Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 you must currently have a Release to Manufacturing (RTM) version of Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 already installed.
  • If you’ve previously installed a pre-release version of Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 on your machine, you must uninstall that version before installing SP1.

The “Standalone debugging symbols” is built for people who debug software and so on. Most of you won’t need it.
