Firefox password recovery freeware

As I have talked about earlier,Firefox, like many popular web browsers, includes a built-in functionality to save your password. Usually we’ll use the saved password feature so often that sometimes we’ve completely forgotten our password. If you’ve forgotten the password to a website, and you need to know it, it’s worth checking to see if firefox has it stored. It easyto find stored passwords  if  your firefox can startup normally (How? see my eariler post “Find stored passwords in firefox“).But how to find the passwords when Firefox fails to open?

Of course, there is a way.All these secret details ,such as username and  password for every website visited by the user at the user consent , are stored in Firefox sign-on database securely in an encrypted format.you can  use the following 2 freeware to  decrypt and recover the sign-on details when Firefox fails to open.

1. FirePasswordViewer

FirePasswordViewer tool can decrypt and display these secrets on the same lines as the Firefox built-in password manager. The main advantage of FirePasswordViewer is that it does not require Firefox to be running. This is very useful in recovering the sign-on details when Firefox fails to function properly. Also FirePasswordViewer can be used to display sign-on secrets from different profile (other than current profile) as well as from the different operating system (such as Linux, Mac etc) altogether. This greatly helps forensic investigators who can copy the relevant files from the target system to test machine and view the credentials offline without affecting the target environment. The displayed sign-on information can then be saved to a file in standard HTML format which can be used as valuable and quick offline reference.

FirePasswordViewer is the standalone application and it does not require any installation. You can just run it by double clicking on the executable file.It is successfully tested with  Firefox version 1.0 to latest version 3.6.3 and should work with any Firefox greater than version 1.0.

Here are the brief usage details.

  • On running, FirePasswordViewer automatically populates the Firefox profile location if it is already installed. Otherwise you can enter the profile location manually.
  • If you have set the master password for your Firefox, then you need to specify the same in the master password box.
  • Once the profile location is specified, you can click on ‘Start Recovery’ button and FirePasswordViewer will instantly recover all passwords from Firefox sign-on store.
  • By default passwords are not shown for security reasons as it is sensitive data. However you can click on ‘Show Password’ button to view these passwords.
  • Finally you can save all recovered password list to HTML file by clicking on ‘Save as HTML’ button.

You can also use FirePasswordViewer to recover passwords from different system either Windows or Linux. In that case you can copy Firefox profile data from remote system to local machine and then specify that path in the profile location field for recovering the passwords.

2,PasswordFox

PasswordFox is a small password recovery tool that allows you to view the user names and passwords stored by Mozilla Firefox Web browser. By default, PasswordFox displays the passwords stored in your current profile, but you can easily select to watch the passwords of any other Firefox profile. For each password entry, the following information is displayed: Record Index, Web Site, User Name, Password, User Name Field, Password Field, and the Signons filename.

[Download PasswordFox]

PasswordFox works under Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Firefox should also be installed on your system in order to use this utility.

PasswordFox doesn’t require any installation process or additional DLL files also. However, Firefox browser must be installed on your computer in order allow PasswordFox to grab the passwords list.

  • In order to start using PasswordFox, simply run the executable file – PasswordFox.exe
  • After running it, the main window will display all your passwords list for the last profile that you used. If PasswordFox chose the wrong profile folder, you can use the ‘Select Profile Folder’ option to choose the right one.

Some Antivirus programs detect PasswordFox utility as infected with Trojan/Virus (According to VirusTotal, 19 out of 41 antivirus detects PasswordFox as  HackTool). Developer explained that as a false positive(see Here ).To me,if it’s a tool that can be used by bad guys, it’s classified as Trojan or Virus, even when most users need it and use it for good purposes.

Since NONE detects FirePasswordViewer as a threat. Now both tool does the same thing, You may  Select FirePasswordViewer as the first choice.

There is many other firefox password recovery freeware, such as Firefox Password Recovery Tool and so on.However, compared to two freeware above, they have disadvantages. If you have  set master password to protect the remembered passwords from getting leaked out which is a feature provided in firefox ,Firefox Password Recovery Tool can do nothing with it.
