Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is a recovery tool designed to rescue an infected PC that can’t boot into windows and perform an offline scan to help identify and remove rootkits and other advanced malware. Besides working as a recovery tool, it also can be used when the installed anti-virus solutions can’t be started, or if the installed solution can’t detect or remove malware on their PC, and detect or remove malware on the PC.
The program installs itself to either a USB drive or a blank CD/DVD disc and creates a bootable media that can be used to recover your system in the event of a malware or virus infection.. The installer will need to download about 250 Mb to complete the installation on your removable media.
Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper is not a replacement for active virus protection on your system. In fact, the software intends to be kind of last resource to be used in situations where you can’t start your PC due to a virus or other malware infection. It isn’t a revolutionary product neither. Most other antivirus vendors have been offering system rescue disks for a long time.

- Users will need an active Internet connection to download the latest virus and spyware definitions for Standalone System Sweeper, and CD or DVD to burn all contents, or a USB stick with at least 250 MB of space.
- The rescue software supports Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista (RTM, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2, or higher) and Windows 7 (RTM, Service Pack 1, or higher), both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Users need to make sure to download the right program version.
